Cleanse, 2023

Dirt on coffee-dyed linen

Following a tumultuous period of two years, I began to ruminate on the notion of the body as a site of memory. My experience of and connection to my body became fraught with an overwhelming sense of discomfort and trauma.

A self-portrait of sorts, Cleanse, was born out of a desire to reimagine my relationship to my body. It presents a visual representation of a path forward—of a return home to myself and my body.

Highly informed by a fixation on dirt and a desire to be embraced by the earth, the self-portrait was painted with mud sourced from Oakland, CA.
